Tonight, in the heart of Buenos Aires, on the stage of Teatro Gran Rex, the TangoBA – World Tango Championship continued. This time we watched the final of the Stage Tango (Tango Escenario) category, featuring twenty couples. The biggest question was: will the pair who won the semifinal manage to become world champions?
20 couples in the final
Twenty couples stepped onto the stage, all having advanced from the earlier rounds. Among them were the Asian and European champions as well. They had already proven that they represent an outstanding level. The highlight of the semifinal winners’ performance was that the woman’s face was covered, and the man “died” at the end — a presentation that sparked a wide range of associations among the audience.
This was the performance that won the semifinal:

Some felt it was a strong artistic concept worthy of a world title, while others saw it more as a misguided BDSM parody. Either way, the jury made a clear decision in the semifinal: five out of the six judges ranked them first.
Tango de Pista Senior – error and correction
In the middle of today’s final, an unusual interruption took place: the corrected results of the Tango de Pista Senior category were announced. Yesterday the final results had been published incorrectly. Today they issued a correction, and the new champions also performed an exhibition dance. For me this was a little sad, because I had performed together with the “previous winner” at the Gente Amiga milonga — the place where, after forty years, performers were allowed once again on the legendary Chico Sunderland dance floor.

And here is what the champions’ dance looks like. I’m very curious about the scoring, but at the moment of writing it hasn’t been published yet. When you read this, check — it might already be up:

Stage Tango
The competition was exciting, and it’s noteworthy that the Buenos Aires audience always snatches up tickets to the Stage Tango final much faster than to the Tango de Pista final.
It’s no coincidence: stage tango is more spectacular, more dramatic, and often offers a theatrical experience. It’s worth comparing the performance of last year’s champions with the production of this year’s winners — you’ll see how many different paths can lead to the same title.
