If the Tango World Championship is the Olympic Games of tango, then the Buenos Aires City Championship – the Campeonato de Baile de la Ciudad – is Argentina’s national qualifier, where the country’s elite face off. This competition, simply known as the Metropolitano, is one of the most exciting tango events of the year, and today at 5:00 PM local time, it reaches its climax: the Grand Final.

An event where the world’s best put themselves to the test

The Campeonato de Baile de la Ciudad is now being held for the 21st time, organized by the Buenos Aires Ministry of Culture. The competition runs from April 30 to May 11 at various venues, culminating in tonight’s final at the iconic Usina del Arte. The stakes are high: the winners will represent Buenos Aires at the Tango BA Festival y Mundial 2025 World Championship finals in August. As soon as the winners are announced, people will already start asking: could this couple go on to win the World Championship this year?

They’ve come from all over the world – even Márta Kubicz is competing

The competition is open to all nationalities, so once again, many international dancers have entered this year. Among them are several of my tango friends from Europe – including Márta Kubicz, the organizer of the Quiero Verte Tango Festival, who is also competing.

No World Champion yet – but we might be seeing them for the first time tonight!

What makes this event special is that many World Champions start here. Last year, for example, Fátima Caracoch and Brenno Lucas won the Metropolitano – and just a few months later, they became World Champions in the Tango de Pista category. To give a Hungarian analogy: the Metropolitano is like when Kristóf Milák and Hubert Kós race each other in the 200-meter butterfly at the national championships. Two Olympic champions!!! Even if it’s “just” a domestic event, everyone knows the World Championship title could be decided here. The winner doesn’t just become a champion – they become an icon.

Watch it live!

The “Gran Final” can be watched live today from 5:00 PM (Buenos Aires time) on tangoba.org. The event is free, but if you’re in Europe, you probably won’t make it in time :) :) :) – unless you’re in Argentina, of course! On-site attendance requires prior registration.
