The Campeonato de Baile de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires – or, as we call it, the Metropolitano, meaning the city championship – once again showed this year why it is one of the most important events in the tango world. The excitement is huge in the Tango de Pista category, a whole bunch of superstars have been eliminated, the final will take place today, Sunday, but the latest news is this: the winner of the Tango Escenario (stage tango) category has been announced. Buenos Aires City Stage Tango Champions: Nuria Lazo and Federico Ibañez

The winners’ dance

Before watching the video, it is worth noticing an interesting musical detail. They did not win with a classic instrumental piece or a deep male voice, as we have often become used to in the stage category. Their chosen track was “Porque vas a venir” performed by Tango Bardo, but here is the real twist: they won over the jury with a female singer (Antonela Alfonso). The winners’ dance can be seen in this video: Gabriel Gutierrez’s video (click here). The important part starts from the eighth minute! Here you can listen to the music on its own:

Why is the Metropolitano worth following?

The city championship is of outstanding importance from several points of view. On the one hand, this is where you can most clearly see what Argentina’s best dancers are preparing for ahead of the later world championship. This competition is also the “big rehearsal,”, On the other hand, it is always worth paying special attention to the winners of the Metropolitano

This year, in the Tango de Pista category, some couples did not make it into the Metropolitano final even though they are otherwise almost permanent participants in the world championship final. Let’s not forget: the year before last, for example, it was the Metropolitano winners who later also won the Pista world championship. Today is where things get really serious: vals, milonga, and even the milongueros del mundo category as well.

Continues on Sunday: finals of the Tango de Pista, Vals, Milonga and Milongueros del Mundo categories

The competition is not over — quite the opposite! It continues on Sunday with the final, where the fate of the other categories will also be decided. You can find the official schedule (Cronograma) here: Metropolitano 2026 Official Program (PDF).
