The Buenos Aires city tango championship, the Campeonato de Baile de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires – or, as we usually call it, the Metropolitano – once again brought an incredibly strong competition this year. The 2026 final was held in the same venue that usually hosts the qualifying rounds and semifinals of the World Championship: the event took place at Usina del Arte in the La Boca district. That alone gave the evening something of a “World Championship prelude” atmosphere, but what made the occasion especially moving was the tribute paid during the program to the recently deceased María Nieves.

One of the clearest takeaways from this year’s competition was just how exceptionally strong the field is in Buenos Aires. The Tango Pista Adultos final in particular drew enormous attention, as many excellent and well-known couples had already been eliminated before the final. This shows very clearly just how competitive the event is: the level of the Metropolitano often comes very close to that of a mini World Championship.

The result in the stage tango category, Tango Escenario, had already been decided the previous day. I wrote about it here earlier: Metropolitano Buenos Aires: stage tango winners 2026.

Categories of the city championship

The finals of the other categories were held on Sunday, May 17, 2026, from 5:00 pm at Usina del Arte. The program included the following categories: Tango de Pista, Tango de Pista Senior, Milonga, Vals, Milongueros del Mundo – Adultos, and Milongueros del Mundo – Senior. Naturally, the greatest attention was focused on the Tango de Pista Adultos category. Not without reason: the results achieved here often foreshadow who may go on to become key figures at the World Championship. You can watch a recording of the final here:

Results

The list of 2026 champions is as follows: Tango Escenario: Nuria Lazo & Federico Ibañez
Tango Pista Adultos: Aldana Figueroa & Matías Gutierrez
Tango Pista Senior: Marcela Pillati & Aldo Romero
Vals: Aldana Figueroa y Matias Gutierrez
Milonga: Magalí Tokian e Ivan Franco
Milongueros del Mundo Adultos: Alexander Sossa y Daría Pechatnikova
Milongueros del Mundo Senior: María Rosa Corsisky y Patita Palleyro
Special mention should go to Aldana Figueroa and Matías Gutierrez, who also won the adult pista final shown in the video. What is more, they were not only the best in this category, but also won the Vals category. A double victory like this is always a major achievement, but in such a dense and high-level field, it is especially impressive. More information is available on the Tango Buenos Aires website.

The World Championship is coming soon!
