If you don’t know the Spanish word “ronda,” it means the circular circulation of the dance floor in tango. While the music would have carried us forward long ago, the line didn’t move, the circle stalled completely, and the dance gradually lost its momentum.
On one hand, I get it: there are more and more dancers, and milongas are getting denser. Sure, you can get used to it — the leader adapts, and the follower may not even notice that the dance has gone into “standstill mode.” But it’s still a pity, because we may ruin our own or others’ chance at tango flow.

Phantom traffic jams and the Japanese experiment

Have you heard of the phenomenon called a phantom traffic jam? You wouldn’t believe how closely it relates to our topic. In 2008, Japanese researchers put 22 cars on a circular track of 230 meters and asked each driver to maintain a speed of 30 km/h.

At first the traffic flowed perfectly, but a single driver’s slight deceleration triggered a wave of congestion moving backward. One by one, the cars braked and then stopped, even as the front of the line could move again.

The researchers called this a “phantom jam” because it seems to arise from nowhere. There was no accident and no obstacle — the jam was caused purely by human reactions. The wave moved backward at about 20 km/h, just as in real highway traffic jams.

A few years later the BBC repeated the experiment and even predicted in advance what would happen:

The experiment proved that traffic instability doesn’t stem from density alone, but from a lack of attention and rhythm. If every vehicle could maintain a steady pace, the jam simply wouldn’t form. The human factor by itself is enough to slow the system down.

So then: what makes a good ronda?

What practical rules help us circulate smoothly around the milonga? I’ve collected a few worth keeping in mind:

Always move in the same direction (counter-clockwise / antihorario) – the basis of the ronda is that couples move around the floor in the same, counter-clockwise direction.
✵

Stay in your lane (no “cutting”) – once you choose your lane (outer, middle, or inner), it’s best to stay there for the tanda and not weave in and out. If possible, don’t try to overtake the couples ahead of you; it disrupts the circle’s rhythm.
✵

Keep even spacing in front of and behind you – the ronda works well when each couple maintains a similar “stepping rhythm” and doesn’t crowd the next pair.
✵

Avoid moving backward against the flow (back steps) – a small, careful back step can be okay, but repeated or long back steps against the flow are rarely appropriate and can be dangerous.
✵

Be mindful when entering and exiting the floor – wait for a moment when the circle isn’t too crowded and step in attentively (e.g., make eye contact) so you don’t disrupt others.
✵

Don’t switch lanes aggressively – constant lane-changing can disturb other couples.
✵

Adapt to the ronda’s rhythm – don’t rush, but don’t dawdle either: watch how others are moving, and if there’s space, pass the flow forward with a small step.
✵

Don’t hold up the ronda — especially not for long – standing in one spot too long or insisting on an overlong figure without maintaining the circle’s motion creates disruption.

This is a good starting point. Of course, everyone makes mistakes — we’re human. For example, I often make the very mistake that annoys me when done to me: I don’t pay enough attention and end up following a step too closely to the couple ahead while there’s plenty of space behind me (see point 3).

The nameless hero — a true story

Let me share the incident that inspired this article.

Two weeks ago at the Hölgyválasz Practica I was practicing. At one point the couple ahead of us didn’t move forward, and the leader — let’s call him the Nameless Hero — started watching their own dance in the mirror next to the DJ booth. He watched himself and his partner, testing how and with what technique he could “spin” her, and meanwhile he was tossing the follower’s legs around. We danced behind them for a while, then we passed them — because at a practica that’s perfectly fine; everyone can do what they want. After a full lap he was still there. No problem — it’s practice. In that context, it was entirely okay.

Then came the milonga. The same dancer, same position, same mirror, right in front of me again. I don’t recall if he had the same partner, but it felt like time had rewound — he stopped and danced in place for a very long time. He even used the mirror to check their movement. There was plenty of space in front of him, and behind him we were all queued up. I didn’t count whether it was more or less than a minute, but the ronda slowed and came to a halt.

After his “performance,” our nameless hero — as a kind of finale — even stepped backward with a big, manly stride. We, like drivers reacting on reflex, all hopped back a step. I protected my partner’s safety, and the couples behind me, like in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, executed a neatly choreographed chain-reaction hop backward.

It was a remarkable moment: behold, the ronda’s phantom traffic jam.

Haladj! – Let the ronda be beautiful again

I don’t blame the nameless hero. In fact, I’m grateful in a way, because he showed how easy it is for one person to create a tango phantom jam. Not out of malice, not even out of carelessness — simply because we sometimes forget: we’re not dancing alone.

Even so, I personally want to dance safely at milongas and I wish for milongas with a pleasing, flowing ronda for all of us.

To that end, I have a workshop curriculum I brought from Argentina — taught to me by a maestra, who in turn learned it from a true milonguero grand master.

Note: this isn’t the usual “ronda etiquette” workshop, but practical, build-into-your-dance knowledge for both leaders and followers — something you can even integrate as combinations.

Title: Haladj! – Let the ronda be beautiful again
Time: Saturday 19:00–20:00
Venue: Hölgyválasz Dance Studio
Price: to keep it accessible (because my goal is to dance at milongas where these things work), it’s free — but to give it some stakes, we added a twist. More details on the FB event.

Teaching — the responsibility of tango teachers

One more thing. These rules aren’t just etiquette or nice tips — they’re teachable knowledge. As tango teachers, it’s our responsibility not only to teach steps but also spatial awareness and attention. A good ronda isn’t made by everyone knowing a new figure, but by everyone knowing how to share the space with others.

Think about it: what would you say about a driving instructor who sends a student into traffic before teaching them how to shift or use the turn signal? Tango isn’t a matter of life and death, of course — but I guarantee you’ll reach tango flow much more easily if we pay a bit more attention to this, both as teachers and dancers.

Wishing you great dances and a harmoniously moving ronda!
I hope this piece helps us all dance a little more attentively — together — on the floor.

photo source: La Viruta Tango Club

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_cta button_url=”https://www.facebook.com/endrestango” url_new_window=”on” button_text=”Tell us what you think” admin_label=”Cselekvésre felhívás gomb” _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” background_color=”RGBA(255,255,255,0)” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_cta][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]

A Japanese experiment, a nameless hero, and the night when the milonga stopped.
